About the attractions
Chotdaebwai is 20m high and located on the northern edge of Hwaaksan. There is one pine needle tree growin on the rock. It looks different depending on the point of view. It is connected with Hwaaksan hiking, magnificent Samil Valley, Beobjangsa and Hwaeumdongjeongsaji.
Hwaeumdongjeongsaji
- Gokun Kim Su-jeung (1624-1701), a Confucian teacher in the Joseon Dynasty forfeited his position and lived in solitude at Yongdam-ri, Sanae-myeon, Hwacheon-gun. In 1670, he began building Gokeunjeongsa and lived there with his family. In 1689, after his brother and friend were killed, he went to Samil-ri as his second hideout and called it Hwaeum-dong and built the Hwaeundongjeongsa.
Bansuamja Beobjangsa
- This temple was built at the request of Priest Hongnul when Kim Su-jeung lived in Hwaeum-dong. It is said to have great sweet dew and located at a geomantically ideal location The pagoda here is known as Hongnul Pagoda.
