Geography & Topography

Hwacheon-gun is a mountainous terrain in which 82.6% of the land area is made of mountains. To the west, the Gwangju Mountain Range extends from northeast to north west and to the east Taebaek Mountain Range creates a rocky high-land topography that is irregularly distributed. There are soft slopes at parts of Oeum-ri and Yuchon-ri in Gandong-myeon, but for the most part, the mountain slopes are steep. In particular, mountains that are around and over 1,000m in altitude are distributed all around, creating a sharp mountain view. Bukhan River, which originates at Geumgangsan (Mt.), flows south and the waterways for the main flow received by Bukhan River are class 1 and 2 streams having an aborescent pattern and there are many places in which the bedrock is exposed.

The soil in this area is the sandy soil from the main flow of Bukhan River and has good drainage. The soil around the mountain has a high amount of alluvial soil with gravel and has good drainage around the mountainside, but depending on the area, there are some places where there is high sedimentation.

Climate Features

The Hwacheon area is located in a mountainous area in the center of the Korean Peninsula and has a continental climate typical in an inland mountainous region. The temperature is generally high during the summer seasons and low during the winter seasons. It has a relatively high temperature differentation and has a lot of precipitation due to the year-round low pressures from China and the humidity in the Taebaek Mountain Range caused by the southwestern seasonal winds in the summer.

Snowfall usually passes through the central section of the country during the winter, but due to the low pressure, it has much less snow compared to that of the Yeongdong area of Gangweon-do. In the winter there is a northwestern seasonal wind that is cold and dry, while a hot and humid southwestern seasonal wind blows in the summer, and prevailaing westerlies blow strong during the spring and autumn seasons. The annual average temperature of Hwacheon in 2001 was 10.8℃, which is lower than the Yeondong area of Gangweon-do and has an annual precipitation of 1,188mm, which is lower than the southern area of the country at 1,500mm and 1,300mm in the central area.
